10 Must Have Items for your Car

I spend about as much time in my car as I do anywhere these days since one of my jobs, it seems, is to chauffeur my kids to and from all their activities.  Several years ago, we succumbed to the minivan phenomenon and haven’t looked back since.  Are you on the minivan train? Don’t knock it until you try it!  Sometimes, I catch a glimpse of myself in the rearview mirror and can’t believe it myself but I am not gonna lie, the doors opening with a push of a button and no fear of door dings makes me feel super fancy.

So, since I spend so much time in my mom-mobile, I might as well load it up with all the essentials so that I can be prepared in the event of an emergency and enjoy being in there!  Here are my top 10 must haves that I always have in my car!

1 – First Aid Kit

We actually made the “boo boo boxes” at a MOPS meeting one time and I thought it was such a useful craft to make and take.  The box includes band-aids, rubber gloves, alcohol wipes, ointment, gauze, etc.  It normally sits right under the drivers seat so I can easily grab it should we need it.

2 – Window Break Tool

This was in all of our stockings one year from my parents.  Should you need to break your window or cut your seat belt, this tool will do the job.  It sits in my driver-side door.

3 – Wet Ones & Hand-Sanitizer

We eat in our car, the copious amount of French fries on the ground when we move a seat do not lie.  I keep a pump bottle of hand sanitizer in the cup holder up front and we can easily pass it around so everyone can wash their hands after an activity.  Wet Ones work great for both wiping down surfaces, cleaning up messes or serving to wipe dirty hands as well.

4 – Scraper

We live in the midwest and that means sometimes I need to scrape and brush off my car.  If you don’t have one in your car, a credit card would do the trick in a pinch!

5 – USB Cable & Plug-in

I listen to a lot of podcasts and Audible books in the car.  I can listen to a lot in one week’s time.  That means occasionally I need to plug in my phone.  I keep a plug and USB cord in the car at all times.  I wrap it up with a little clip in the cup holder.

6 – IPad Holder for the Headrest

Our van doesn’t have a built-in entertainment center but each of our kids have an iPad they use for road trips.  The older two just hold on to theirs but the littlest one needs a holder (like this one) so she doesn’t accidentally keep closing out of her shows.  The headrest holder works great and the passenger can easily undo it should she need a new show or different activity.

7 – Dust Mitt

I love a clean van.  The rule of thumb is to take trash out every single time we get home.  The third row doesn’t always get that memo but we try.  I also keep a microfiber dust mitt (like this one) tucked into the center console so when I have a moment while running carpool, I can dust!  I am more likely to do it if it’s already in the car.

8 – Jumper Cables

We have actually needed to use jumper cables on several occasions to either jump someone else’s car or our own.  One time while tailgating we left the radio on to listen to the post-game show and wore down the battery!

9 – Car Seat Protectors

There’s nothing worse than pulling out your carseat for a girls night to find glued on, petrified food stuck beneath the car seat.  We grabbed some car seat protectors so that when we remove the carseat, the most we have to do is a quick vacuum.  Find ours here.

10 – Quarter

I always keep a quarter in my car for Aldi trips.  Sometimes, I will even leave a dollar in the change container so I can pick-up a fountain soda at Sonic, one of my favorite treats on the go!

I also like to keep my updated insurance card and registration in my glove compartment just in case.  I also usually keep my yoga mat, some kids books and a blanket for picnics in the summer or in case of emergencies in the winter.  We just got a new stroller that collapses so small and I love that it takes up so little space in my trunk but I can use it if I need it.  I also keep other essentials in my purse that I generally take along with me.  Read this post to find out what I keep in my purse.  It’s kind of like a Mary Poppins bag ;)!

What do you keep in your car?  Do you spend a lot of time in your car, like I do?  I am seriously considering adding chauffeur to my resume.  If you blogged about 10 items you keep in your car, share your link below and then make sure to visit two other blogs and say hello!

Until next time keep on keeping on with a simple purposeful life!
