10 Best Places To Travel

I love to travel.  The travel bug bit me early and it probably bit the moment I stepped aboard the airplane headed to Switzerland, our new home when I was just 8 years old.  Almost every weekend, we would hop into our little 4 door sedan or jump on a train and visit the sites of Europe.  I took those experiences for granted as a kid but I am so thankful for those experiences as an adult.  Although, most likely I will never be able to live abroad with my children, traveling with them and going on adventures with our family is high on my priority list.

The travel bug has bitten my kids too, so I compiled a list of our top 10 places to travel.  It’s our monthly 10 on the 10th link-up so if you have a list, make sure to link-up.  If not, list yours in the comments.  We are always looking for new places to find adventure!

10 Best Places To Travel

1- Italy

I love Italy! That’s all there is to it.  I student taught in Italy and spent about 3 months living in the central district of Rome.  I ran to St. Peter’s Square when the smoke signified a new pope had been chosen, my friend Meagan and I walked the treacherous trails of Cinque Terre, drank wine in Tuscany, visited the beautiful island of Capri, met David, and were serenaded in a gondola for two.  Scott came to visit with his parents and we hope to go back again someday! I love Italy!

2 – Switzerland

Of course, I am partial to this beautiful country since I called him for 2 1/2 years.  We lived in Lausanne on Lake Geneva.  We loved eating fondue in Gruyeye, skiing in Gstaad, visiting the Bern bears, the Matterhorn in Zermatt (cutest quaint town ever) and so much more.  The country is pristine and simply stunning.

Family at Brooklyn Bridge New York City

3 – New York City

My parents have lived in New York City and it was so fun to go visit them and be shown around by a “local”.  From biking through central park to shopping in Soho, eating at one of the many famous restaurants to seeing a show on Broadway.  There’s nothing like driving into the city from the airport, the buzz is palpable!  You can read more about our trip here and here.

Father and Son on ski lift Breckenridge, Colorado

4 – Breckenridge, Colorado

Breckenridge is our family’s favorite ski resort.  You can read about our adventures here. Not only is there plenty of trails for all ability levels, the ski school is phenomenal.  That coupled with the quaintest town full of delicious restaurants, fun stores and copious amounts of charm.  It’s on our bucket list to visit  Breckenridge in the summer too!  We love to stay here.

5 – Anna Maria Island, Florida

I love quaint beach towns – colorful houses, little ice cream shops, local restaurants eating al fresco, walks along the beach and traveling by bicycle.  We have visited places like Hilton Head Island and Siesta Key but the calm waves, shallow water, and non-busy beaches are my favorite.  Anna Maria Island is located south of Tampa along the gulf coast of Florida.  I especially love Bean Beach on the northern tip of the island.  You can read about it here.

6 – London, England

I am obsessed with the royal family and have visited London twice, once as a little girl and when I was living in Rome.  From visiting all the tourist attractions to sitting in the beautifully landscaped gardens to witnessing in person the royal jewels and on a much sillier note, I just love walking around hearing that British accent.

Coconut Palms Resort building New Symrna Beach Florida

7 – New Symrna Beach, Florida

I grew up going to visit my grandparents in NSB.  It’s the quiet town just south of Dayton Beach, FL on the Atlantic side of Florida.  The waves provide great boogie boarding and watching the surfers.  You can drive and park on the beach, when I was learning how to drive, my grandpa let me drive on the beach.  Our favorite restaurant is Breaker’s and JB’s Fish Camp.  We always stay here.

Family with Koala at Featherdale in Sydney, Australia

8 – Australia

Scott’s sister’s family lived in Australia for 3 years so we took the kids when Solon was 2 and Vera was 5 months old.  Some might call us crazy but when you have family living abroad you have to take advantage and go.  We have never regretted our 2-week visit.  The Australian people are some of the nicest, most family-friendly people I have ever met. I would move there in a heartbeat, the weather isn’t bad either!  You can read more about our trip — here, here and here.

Couple in front of Royal Caribbean Cruise ship St. Thomas

9 – St. Thomas

We love to cruise and visit different islands.  St. Thomas is by far my favorite.  The people are kind, the water is beautiful and there are lots of things to do but plenty of beaches to sit on and do nothing.  The Caribbean is simply beautiful!  If you have ever wondered about cruising, read this post.

10 – China

While we haven’t visited this amazing country yet.  I know it will, most certainly, make the list of 10 places we have ever visited because our child will be from there.  We can’t wait to explore and immerse ourselves in the culture.  We, for sure, will be staying in Guangzhao, hope to travel to the Great Wall of China and Beijing, and might fly out of Hong Kong!  The itinerary will depend on where our child is located!  We can’t wait!

So, there you have it – 10 of my favorite places to travel. We have also loved visiting Canada, Seattle, Washington DC, and many places closer to home like Chicago, Kansas City, Omaha, Chicago, and Minneapolis.  We hope to take our kids to St. Louis and the Black Hills soon!  What’s on your travel bucket list?  Have you been bitten by the travel bug?  For us, it’s always a balance between relaxation and exploration!

Until next time keep on keeping on with a simple purposeful life!
