Life Lately Volume 6

I can’t believe summer is nearly over.  I heard it said the other day that August is like the Sunday of summer!  I always call it the don’t go month of summer!  Whatever the case may be, we have been checking a few more items off our summer bucket list, enjoying lazy days at home rediscovering toys and built-in sibling playmates as well as a few adventures.  Let’s see what we have been up to lately!

Solon wanted to learn how to play Settlers of Catan so the three of sat down one weekend afternoon to play.  He beat us his first round.  We are excited because Scott and I love to play but you have to have 3 players to play so now we can play more often!  Find the game here.

The weather has finally cooled enough to make a couple of trips to local parks.  One day the kids and I biked around to several different parks and enjoyed a picnic lunch along the way.  Another day, we biked to a local park and then biked to Dairy Queen.   After picking up school supplies, we celebrated with yet another trip to the park with McDonalds!

We all enjoyed VBS this year.  The theme was Shipwrecked and it was Lucy’s first year to go!  I volunteered to co-lead Vera’s group as well as assist with emcee-ing!  Lucy keeps asking to go back!  Scott even helped me out by acting with me in a skit one evening!  VBS week was a highlight of our summer.  Nothing better than the joy for the lord shared with kids!

We attended a family reunion for Scott’s Great Uncle Merle’s 100th birthday.  His birthday wish was that we all could experience a long blessed life like him!  We enjoyed meeting up with our Minnesota cousins for the day and grabbing a pizza for dinner before we headed home!

We have spent lots of time hitting up the local pools.  Nana and Papa invite us over quite a bit to use their pool and then we also have season passes to our 2 city pools.  It’s always fun to meet up with friends and come home after, take a bath and have dinner in our pajamas!

We back to school shopped and got all of the kids’ supplies (read my top money saving tips for back to school shopping).  I love to shop early to avoid the crowds and make sure we get what’s on the list without too much hassle.  School doesn’t start around here until August 22nd so we still have plenty of time to enjoy summer!

Bubbles, our beta fish, celebrated his 1st gotcha day on July 31st so to celebrate we got him a new fish house, a pagoda in honor of our adoption and a pretty pink plastic plant.  Bubbles seem to be enjoying the new accessories and the Petsmart worker told us since he lived a year, he should live a few more.  Yay!  No one is more surprised than me that he is still alive and doing swimmingly!

We had a quiet weekend with very little on the agenda so I took off to shop alone for the first time in forever.  I love having all my kids home but I cannot remember the last time I ran errands solo and enjoyed the quiet!  I got coffee and went into all the stores I never get to go to and just browsed.  It was heavenly and I came home to smiling faces and lots of hugs. It’s good to be missed sometimes!

Sunday we had to speak at both church services so afterward we hit up brunch at a local bbq place.  While we waited for our table, we walked up the road to Scott’s new work and stopped by the murals for some photos.

The kids earned free passes to the zoo through the library’s summer reading program so on Monday we headed to the zoo!  Since they got in free we paid to ride the carousel, train and for the first time, we rode a camel!  It was a bumpy but memorable ride!  We all had a great day at the zoo complete with another picnic lunch.

We also got word this week that we are officially LID which means we are logged into the Chinese welfare system and ready to accept a referral.  The process of getting files has slowed down in the recent months so it might be a few more months before we get a match but we have peace that it will all be in God’s perfect timing.  At this point, our work is done which is a huge milestone!

I think that does it for life lately.  We still have a lake trip with friends, cousin camp, the Iowa State Fair, an overnight getaway for Scott & I and several birthdays to look forward to before we say goodbye to summer.  However, I am totally starting to crave the structure that comes with going back to school but we have a busy fall ahead so I am going to enjoy a few more lazy days at home first!

Until next time keep on keeping on with a simple purposeful life!
