40th Birthday Prom Party Details

Turning 40 is a milestone that often comes with mixed emotions. Some may dread it, fearing the inevitable march of time, while others embrace it with open arms, welcoming the wisdom and experiences that come with age. I fell firmly into the latter category when my 40th birthday approached, and I decided to celebrate this significant moment in a way that would honor my past and create lasting memories for the future. Here’s the thing I have come to realize: many people are not given the gift to grow old and watch their kids grow up. Thus, my 40th birthday prom was born – an event that transported us all back to awkward dance moves, fun dresses, and timeless friendships.

Hosting a 40th birthday prom sounded fun because I love to dance, but as a mom of 4, you won’t find me at the local club. My dance moves are reserved for the kitchen during our daily dance parties. Who doesn’t love to get dressed up and have a little fun and remember, age is just a number. We can still get jiggy with it. Do they still say that? I guess I am acting my age. I hoped my friends and family would humor me with this fun idea, and I was right.

Creating a Nostalgic Atmosphere

Creating an authentic prom atmosphere was crucial to making the event a success. While we could have it at home, we didn’t want to disturb the peace and have the police show up with a noise ordinance violation, so we rented out the local American Legion. It was a great way to support our military veterans with a donation, and it was perfect for the event.

We transformed the venue with balloon garlands. This one from Walmart was easy to put together & the price was right. Balloons, bright colored tablecloths, and Costco flowers we arranged in mason jars adorned the tables, while two disco ball-type lights from Amazon (grab yours here) cast shimmering patterns across the dance floor. It was like stepping into a time machine that whisked us all back to our teenage years.

Inviting Friends and Family

Inviting friends and family was technically easy, but I put it off. At this age, you have been through a friendship break-up or two, plus friendships fizzling during the pandemic, and well, my husband finally sat me down, and we did it. We created a Facebook invite with all of the details so it was easy to RSVP. Just spread the word to your friends who don’t frequent social media.

Once the idea was out there, almost everyone was excited to dust off their old prom attire or get creative with new outfits. Some went to thrift stores, others dug out old bridesmaid dresses, some recreated their prom outfit, and others borrowed from friends. Seeing how eager everyone was to share this experience with me was heartwarming. I picked mine up on a sale rack at a local department store, and Scott got his suit on Amazon (here). His outfit stole the show. It won’t be the last time you see either of our outfits.

Seeing my friends and family arrive at their prom made my night. It was a reminder that age is just a number, and we can all channel our inner teenagers when the occasion calls for it.

Renting A Venue

As I mentioned before, we decided to rent the local American Legion. It was large enough for a dance floor and had plenty of space for a few tables near the dance floor so guests could socialize and reminisce.

Creating a Nostalgic Playlist

Ah, the music – one of the most critical elements of any prom. Crafting a playlist that transported us through all 40 years was no small feat, but it was worth it. Scott and I sat down one night, reviewed our favorite artists, and added music to a playlist on Amazon Music.

Then, Scott mixed in classic hits like the jitterbug and YMCA. He also included iconic slow jams like our wedding’s first dance and my prom theme song to make it nostalgic. When the first few notes of our favorite songs played, it was as though we were teenagers all over again, giddy with anticipation. My friends rose to the occasion and hit the dance floor. We grabbed these light-up glasses for extra fun; they were a hit.

Setting Up a Photo Booth

A prom wouldn’t be complete without a photo booth; ours was a hit. After attending a wedding that had one last summer, I knew this would be the splurge of the evening. It was filled with props, encouraging everyone to let loose and have fun. The photos captured spontaneous laughter, silly poses, and genuine joy. Looking back at those pictures, it’s clear that we made memories that will last a lifetime.

What Food Did We Serve, You Ask?

Food has a unique way of bringing people together, and we wanted to ensure that our guests had something delicious to nibble on throughout the night. A nacho bar seemed the perfect choice – easy, customizable, and oh-so-tasty. Guests could load up their nachos with all their favorite toppings.

We grabbed all the supplies from Costco, from the salsa to the carnitas meat we put in a slow cooker to the chips and queso. You haven’t lived until you have tried the Costco queso. We also had some mini desserts and candy to enjoy.

Memorable Moments

While the entire night was filled with memorable moments, a few stood out. One was that my parents didn’t want to leave my kids out, so they rented a limo and ordered take-out pizza. We took the limo to get the pizza, and the kids loved it. The limo then took us to prom. A few of my friends had never ridden in a limo, so we scooped the loop later that evening. Another was standing before my friends, singing Happy Birthday to me. They had taken time out of their busy schedules to come and celebrate with me. I’ll never forget it. These moments reminded me that life is a tapestry of experiences, and each thread contributes to the beauty of the whole, no matter how small.

Community and Connection

What struck me most about this experience was how it brought our community closer—friends connected on the dance floor. Family members shared stories and laughter over nachos. It was a reminder that taking the time to celebrate and connect with loved ones is invaluable in our busy lives. I often find the memories from nights like these are the greatest gift.
