Aldi Recipe: Easy Sausage and Pea Pasta for Dinner

May 21, 2024

If you’re searching for an easy and delicious weeknight dinner idea, look no further than this Aldi Sausage and Pea Pasta recipe. My sister, who has three kids and two baby twins, shared this recipe with me. You know it’s easy when it comes from a new mom with limited time. It only takes two pans, which makes cleanup a breeze!

While this dish takes less than 15 minutes to assemble and has a limited ingredient list, it is affordable and flavorful. I call it my under $7 Aldi pasta. Plus, it feeds our entire family with leftovers! Making it a perfect addition to your Aldi meal plan. With ingredients easily found at your local Aldi, you can whip up a meal that the whole family will love.

Aldi Recipe: Easy Sausage and Pea Pasta for Dinner

Ingredients

To start, here’s what you’ll need for this delectable dish:

  • One package of Italian sausage, pork sausage, or chicken sausage from Aldi
  • One package of pasta (penne or rigatoni work great)
  • One bag of frozen peas, cooked
  • 1/2 Onion, sliced **Easier for my kids to remove
  • Two cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup of pasta water **Add a chicken bouillon cube to pasta water for extra flavor
  • Olive oil
  • Salt & Black pepper
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes (for extra spice) & chopped fresh parsley (garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Pasta

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. I like adding a chicken bouillon cube to the pasta water to add flavoring. Add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water before draining the pasta.

Step 2: Prepare the Sausage, Onion & Garlic

Begin by heating a large skillet over medium-high heat with oil; add onions, garlic, and sausage. Remove the casing from the Italian or chicken sausage and add it to the skillet. I usually buy the Appleton Farms Premium Pork Sausage found in the Aldi refrigerated cases by the bacon. Cook, breaking up the sausage into bite-sized pieces with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through. This should take about 2-3 minutes.

Step 3: Combine Ingredients

Once the sausage is cooked, add the peas (make sure they are cooked) and 1/2 cup pasta water, and simmer until the pasta is ready—season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes for extra spice to taste. I usually omit the red pepper flakes when I make it for my family, but my sister’s family loves spicy foods.

Step 4: Mix in the Pasta & Parmesan

Add the cooked pasta and grated Parmesan cheese to the skillet, tossing to coat. Cook over medium heat for another 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Tips and Variations

  • Add More Vegetables: Fresh produce like bell peppers, broccoli, spinach, or mushrooms can boost the nutritional value.
  • Make it Spicy: Increase the red pepper flakes, add in spicy Italian sausage, or add a dash of hot sauce for an extra kick.
  • Use Different Proteins: For a different twist, try substituting the sausage with crispy chicken, fish fillets, shrimp, or black beans.
  • Make it Creamy: Add 1 cup of heavy cream to the sauce with the pasta water.

Time to Enjoy Dinner

Serve the pasta hot, garnished with fresh parsley and additional Parmesan cheese. I like to serve this dish with fresh vegetables, a side salad, garlic bread, or fruit for a dinner winner! Plus, this makes plenty so you can package it for leftovers. These are my favorite glass to-go containers, so you can pack the leftovers individually, making grabbing and heating them even simpler!

Just Remember…

By incorporating affordable Aldi dinner ideas like this into your meal plan, you can enjoy tasty, homemade meals without breaking the bank. This sausage and pea pasta will become a family favorite and a regular in your rotation of easy dinners.

Plus, with ingredients that can be found at affordable prices at your local Aldi, it’s a great example of cheap Aldi meals that don’t skimp on quality. With a prep time of just 10-15 minutes, this pasta recipe is ideal for busy weeknights. As I always say, it doesn’t have to be fancy to feed your family and be delicious. Happy cooking!
