Aldi Recipe: How to Make an Easy Classic Caprese Salad

June 18, 2024

Caprese salad, also known as Insalata Caprese, is a classic Italian dish that originated on the island of Capri. Years ago, I student-taught in Rome (yes, you read that correctly), and my friend Megan and I visited this charming island, sipping Limoncello and eating this delicious salad that looks fancy but is so easy.

This simple yet flavorful salad is perfect for weeknight meals, BBQs, potlucks, or a light and refreshing lunch. It’s one of my favorite go-to summer salads with fresh, ripe tomatoes. With just a few simple ingredients you can find at your local Aldi, add this delicious and fancy-looking salad to your next Aldi meal plan. It’s just another one of my favorite Aldi recipes.

Let’s get cooking, shall we?

Aldi Recipe: Easy Classic Caprese Salad

Ingredients

  • 1 pint of fresh tomatoes, sliced (cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes, halved, also work)
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced or cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 10-12 fresh basil leaves, torn or sliced
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (I prefer to use balsamic vinegar glaze)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Place slices of tomatoes on a large plate or platter, then layer on sliced mozzarella and top torn or chopped fresh basil leaves.
  2. Drizzle the extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar over the salad.
  3. Add a sprinkle of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  4. Let the salad sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. (I usually just make it while other items are cooking and then serve at dinner; this gives time for the flavors to merry)
  5. Serve on a serving platter or in individual bowls, garnished with additional basil leaves if desired.

Caprese Salad Variations and Tips

  • Use small mozzarella balls or pearls instead of slicing a larger piece of cheese for a creamier texture.
  • You can make this into a pasta salad by chopping all the ingredients and tossing them to coat in a bowl.
  • Add a balsamic reduction or glaze drizzle for a sweet and tangy flavor. (My favorite)
  • Use a variety of tomatoes, such as heirloom or cherry tomatoes, for added color and flavor.
  • Sprinkle with a pinch of flaky sea salt for a crunch and flavor.
  • Serve this simple salad with crusty bread for a light meal or appetizer.

The Origin of Caprese Salad

Caprese salad, named after the island of Capri, is a simple Italian salad that showcases the colors of the Italian flag: red (tomatoes), white (mozzarella), and green (basil). The salad is traditionally served as an appetizer or a light main course, often accompanied by a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a splash of balsamic vinegar.

Why Caprese Salad is a Favorite

Caprese salad is a favorite for many reasons:

  1. It’s easy to make with just a few simple ingredients.
  2. It’s a light and refreshing salad that’s perfect for the summer months.
  3. It’s versatile and can be served as a side dish, appetizer, or light main course.
  4. It’s a crowd-pleaser and a great option for potlucks and BBQs.

It’s Time to Eat

Easy Caprese salad is a delicious and simple classic Italian salad that’s stood the test of time for good reason. Plus, it doesn’t break the bank, making it another of my favorite cheap Aldi meals.

It’s not only a simple side dish perfect for any occasion, but your taste buds will be so happy with the juicy tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, and sweet basil- an easy recipe in the simplest form, making it one of my favorite Aldi dinner ideas. Give it a try and enjoy the taste of summer in every bite!
