Simple & Fun Family Holiday Craft Competition

Over the weekend, one of our new favorite holiday traditions was born by accident. A simple and fun family holiday craft competition.

Our Advent activity of the day was “Christmas crafts”. Not everyone was excited so we turned it into a simple and fun family holiday craft competition. It was a fan favorite and would be perfect activity for the upcoming holidays.

How does a holiday craft competition work?

Form Teams

The premise is that you break up into teams with a like project. In our case, we divide up boys vs. girls but you could make family group, spouses or pair off.

Get a Craft Kit

I picked up 2 of these $3 ornament kit at the Target Dollar Spot. Then, we set a timer for 10 minutes and got to work decorating our Christmas ornament.

Set a Time Limit

Each team had 10 minutes to complete their ornament.

Devise a Way to Vote

At the conclusion of 10 minutes, we took pictures of our ornaments and sent them to extended family so they could vote. It was a fun way to invited our family far away into the holiday fun.

If it’s a party, you could display each project with a number in front of it and have slips of paper so people can vote for their favorite anonymously.

For us, the results were an even split but everyone agreed it was a really fun way to spend less than an hour of quality family time together.

One More Simple Holiday Craft Activity

To conclude our family’s holiday craft competition, we each made a pipe cleaner snowflake that they hung on their bedroom Christmas trees either as a tree topper or an ornament.

Pipe Cleaner Snowflake Kid’s Craft

What you need –

  • Pipe cleaners
  • string or twine
  • beads with holes to string on snowflakes

How To Make A Pipe Cleaner Snowflake

Start by cutting 3 pipe cleaners in half. Then, gather up 3 1/2 pipe cleaners and tie in the middle with a small piece of twine and bend out the pipe cleaners to make a star or snowflake shape.

Then, start stringing the beads on to the snowflake. Leave a little room at the end to bend the pipe cleaner at the end and secure the beds. You can add a bit of hot glue to for extra security.

Tie a bit of string on one of the snowflake arms so you can hang it on the tree.
