30 Simple Hosting Hacks & Tips For a Stress-Free Holiday

November 18, 2024

Whether you are hosting Thanksgiving, Christmas, or a party somewhere in between, it can make people stop before they start. There’s so much to think about, and you must clean your house while people continue living in it. Can you relate?

One of the biggest struggles for hosts is they overextend themselves and don’t delegate. As a result, they often miss being present with those we care about because we’re so wrapped up in the prep, planning, and perfecting. But the whole point of gathering is to savor time with loved ones, not stress over to-do lists.

Enter these 30 tiny tweaks that will help you simplify, delegate, and, most importantly, enjoy the most beautiful time of the year with a grateful heart.

And if all the holiday planning feels too much, I created the Merry Made Easy series to help you sidestep Scrooge and shine as the holiday MVP! It’s packed with tips to make merry memories without the added stress so you can truly enjoy the season.  Read about holiday planning here, simplifying holiday gifting here, and my best tips to make decorating easier here.

Simple Hosting Hacks & Tips For a Stress-Free Holiday

Ahead of The Holiday

1. Plan Your Menu and Delegate

Start with a guest list and create a simple menu based on guests’ likes. If unsure, ask your family what they want and focus on that. If no one likes green bean casserole, don’t serve it. My family despises sweet potatoes, so while they are a staple at many holiday tables, they aren’t at our house.

Don’t forget to ask about potential dietary restrictions. Use a group text to coordinate dishes, so when a family member asks, “What can I bring?” you have a list ready. Saying yes when others offer help adds to the festive atmosphere and lightens your load.

2. Make a Grocery List & Batch Grocery Trips

Pick up non-perishable items like canned goods, spices, and baking supplies well in advance. Save your local grocery store runs closer to the holiday for fresh items only. This will help you avoid last-minute shopping stress and ensure you get what you need.

3. Buy Halfway Homemade & Pre-made Items

Pick up pie crusts, rolls, bagged salad kits, or pre-made pies from your local grocery store. They are there for a reason. Growing up, my Grandparents hosted us each Thanksgiving in Florida, and my Grandma ordered the entire meal every year. I have the best memories of those meals!

4. Stock Up on Disposable Supplies

Essentials like disposable roasting pans, plastic utensils, paper plates, and napkins. Having these ready minimizes cleanup. For kids, use a plastic tablecloth that makes spills and art projects easy to clean up. If you are attending and not hosting a holiday meal, consider grabbing these items and putting them in a basket with the tag, “Let Me Do the Dishes.”

5. Create a Cleaning Schedule

Break your cleaning into manageable chunks. Tackle significant areas like the living room or guest bathroom early, and save daily resets for high-traffic zones like the kitchen. Don’t forget to ask your family to help.

6. Organize Your Serving Pieces

Label platters and bowls for each dish you’re serving to avoid a scramble on the day of the party. There’s always a dish I forget to serve, and this tweak ensures it doesn’t get lost in the back of a packed fridge. Plus, others can help you prepare the meal, knowing what goes where!

One Week Before

6. Set Up a Leftover Station

Gather muffin tins for your make-and-take leftover station. This holiday hack keeps portions neat and easy to carry home. Each compartment is perfect for stuffing, mashed potatoes, or slices of pot roast.

7. Line Baking Sheets with Parchment Paper

Prep baking sheets with parchment paper for less cleanup, especially for roasted veggies or baked sides. Parchment paper saves time and makes food preparation a breeze.

8. Create Your Beverage Station

Set up a self-serve beverage station with seasonal mix-ins, cafe beverages, and creamers like cinnamon dolce latte and caramel macchiato. Add festive drink inspiration like peppermint and cinnamon sticks for a warm and inviting touch. This means you don’t have to grab people’s drinks and cook, simplifying your hosting duties.

9. Prep Your Cooler for Extra Storage

Use a cooler to free up fridge space for sides and desserts or to keep beverages cold. If you’re in a pinch, the cooler can double as a warming station for hot dishes by lining it with aluminum foil and placing heated bricks at the bottom. It’s an unexpected way to keep your main dish or drinks at the right temperature. We’ve even used our back decks in the Midwest for extra “cool” storage.

Last year, I set up my beverage station on my patio table so people could easily see the drink options and grab them as needed. Just don’t leave them outside in freezing temperatures. My mom once did that with a bottle of champagne. What a mess!

10. Prepare a Charging Station

Use a decorative basket with labeled chargers for different devices. Post the Wi-Fi password nearby so guests can plug in their phones and focus on the holiday dinner party.

11. Prep Your Guest Room

For overnight guests, make the guest bedroom cozy with extra blankets and toiletries. Add a basket with snacks, travel toiletries, and water bottles for a thoughtful touch. Check out my toiletry jar tweak here.

A Few Days Before

12. Pre-Chop Ingredients

Save yourself time on the big day by pre-chopping veggies (or, better yet, buying them pre-chopped) and storing them in airtight containers. Items like onions, carrots, and celery can be prepped in advance and stored in the fridge, along with casseroles and mashed potatoes.

13. Set Up the Kids’ Table

Use a plastic tablecloth and set out fun activities like coloring sheets, stickers, or small crafts. It’s a great way to keep kids occupied and makes cleanup a breeze. Craft stores like Hobby Lobby have great little art kits that keep kids busy while they wait for their meals.

14. Make Desserts Ahead

Bake pies or other desserts that hold well, like a delicious holiday-themed pie crust or cookie recipe, and store them in the fridge or freezer. Doing this ensures you have enough time for last-minute meal prep. You can even pre-make cookie dough and freeze the balls. Then, thaw and bake on the day before or for fresh cookies.

The Day Before

15. Set the Holiday Table The Night Before

Lay out your holiday table the night before with fresh flowers, a scented candle, and place settings. Small details like these set the stage for a memorable gathering, and doing it the night before means less work on the day of the celebration. Kids and spouses can help with this; don’t hesitate to ask.

If you are hosting a large group, you might consider serving it buffet style. In this case, you can prep the table with a simple centerpiece. I usually shop at my house first for holiday decor, or you could get some fresh flowers.

16. Assemble an Appetizer Tray

Prepare a charcuterie board or simple appetizer tray and cover it with plastic wrap. This will make it easy to keep guests happy while the main meal finishes.

17. Prep Breakfast In Advance

Make overnight oats or a breakfast casserole (this one is my favorite) to enjoy on the morning or the day after when you’re worn out and don’t want to deal with extra hassle. You’ll appreciate having something ready as the bustle of the holiday season continues.

On The Holiday

18. Use Disposable Roasting Pans

A disposable roasting pan is your best tip for easy cleanup after cooking the turkey. It saves you from scrubbing a heavy pan at night’s end.

19. Triple-Line Your Trash Cans

Triple-line your trash cans with garbage bags, and stash extras at the bottom so anyone can easily take out the trash and replace the bag. It’s a simple trick that keeps cleanup quick and easy!

20 .Recyclables Station

Set up a bin labeled for recyclables next to the trash can to make sorting easy for guests. It keeps your kitchen tidy and helps with eco-friendly cleanup.

21. No-Shoes Reminder

Place a pair of shoes by the door as a subtle reminder for guests to remove theirs. It keeps your floors cleaner without needing to make an announcement.

22. Set the Tone with Music and Scent

Create a warm, inviting holiday atmosphere by playing a playlist of holiday music and lighting scented candles. Place one in the guest bathroom for a thoughtful touch that helps guests feel at ease. These small details add festive flair and make your home feel extra special.

23. Prep the Sink & Dishwasher before Guests Arrive

Fill your sink with warm, soapy water. Toss used dishes in as you go to prevent a traffic jam of dirty plates piling up. Unload the dishwasher so it’s empty and people can add to it to keep counter clutter at bay as well.

24. Use Slow Cookers to Keep Food Warm

Keep mashed potatoes, gravy, or holiday punch warm in slow cookers. It helps manage oven space and ensures everything stays hot and ready.

25. Put Out Pre-Scooped Ice Cream & Prep Whipped Cream

If serving à la mode desserts, pre-scoop ice cream and store it in the freezer. This avoids a line at the freezer and keeps dessert service stress-free.

26. Create a Coat Drop Zone

If your coat closet is full, use your bathtub lined with a clean shower curtain as a secure spot for coats. We use my office desk or main floor bedroom to store coast well. It keeps things organized and out of the way. After the Feast

27. Wrap Up Leftovers with Ease

Cover muffin tins with foil so guests can take leftovers home. This wow-worthy hack makes portioning simple and keeps your holiday dinner from going to waste.

28. Set Up a Cleaning Brigade

Make a conscious effort to delegate tasks like clearing the table, putting food away, or loading the dishwasher. A little help from everyone means you’re not stuck with the cleanup.

29. Use Disposable Plates for Dessert & Subsequent Meals

If you’re tired of dishes, switch to festive paper plates for dessert. It’s a simple switch that adds festive flair and makes your life easier.

30. Plan Simple After-Feast Activities

Keep the post-feast vibe relaxed and fun by having a few leisurely activities ready, like a puzzle, a holiday movie, or a couple of simple party games. It’s a great way to wind down, keep the holiday spirit going, and enjoy quality time together. Check out these fun party games here and my favorite Christmas party games here.
