It’s almost the 4th of July! It’s been my favorite day of the year since I was 10 and we visited our lake “home” for the first time.  We spend the day on the lake, have a big family meal, and enjoy fireworks over the lake. Not only is the 4th of July my favorite holiday for many it signifies the unofficial halfway mark for summer. So, I thought it would be good to check in and make some mid-summer reflections so that we can finish the summer season well. A time to make a few tiny tweaks to our routines and our calendar to be sure we get all we want to do done.

Hopefully, by now, you have sunk into a summer routine.  Slowly the go-go days of summer are giving way to the slow-go days of July.  We talked about the 3 phases of summer and how to plan for summer with kids in this blog post.  Summer is a season of warmth, relaxation, and cherished memories with our loved ones. However, as moms, we often find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities and trying to create the perfect summer experience for our families.

In the pursuit of creating those ideal moments, we can sometimes become overwhelmed and lose sight of what truly matters. This is why it’s important to embrace simplicity and find joy in the little things So, as the 4th of July rolls around and marks the unofficial halfway mark of summer, I want to take a moment to explore some reflective questions with you.

The power of awareness and reflection helps us take intentional action, pivot if necessary, and make plans for things we have yet to do. We can also give thanks for the many memories and moments we have already had. It also brings peace to that momma’s heart that indeed you have done enough.  We will close with a few practical tips to keep summer simple and stress-free. Let’s dive in!  Remember, simple doesn’t mean boring!

Mid-Summer Reflection Questions for Moms & Families

I encourage you to answer these questions both for yourself and as a family. You might have a more critical perspective or overlook something your family might see. Knowing what matters to all of you will help you have a fulfilled summer. We all want that don’t we?

  1. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your summer so far?  1 – being uh oh to 10-wow.  Why did you rate it that?  What’s gone well? What’s been hard?
  2. What have been some highlights of the summer for me and my family so far?
  3. Have I accomplished the goals or plans I had for the summer? If not, can I still schedule them into our calendar?  Or have I changed my mind?  Changing your mind is okay by the way!
  4. What’s been the biggest surprise of summer so far?
  5. What’s something that’s been a challenge? Can we make a tweak or small adjustment to help with this? If so, what can we try?
  6. What do I want to do more of in the final days of summer?  What do I want to do less of?

Just Remember…

Taking a few moments to reflect increases self-awareness, helps us learn from experiences, improves problem-solving and decision-making. Reflection allows us to take a moment to be grateful.  In a fast-paced world, we have to be intentional about reflection and cultivating gratitude. This exercise will enhance our relationships, provide insights to make better choices that ultimately help us lead a more fulfilling life.

We only get one life, we all want to enjoy it on purpose.  So, take a moment halfway through summer and reflect.  Pivot if something isn’t working, put things on the calendar you want to be sure to do – there’s power in planning.  And remember it doesn’t have to be fancy to be fulfilling and fun.  If you look at the list of highlights of the summer, my guess is there are a lot of little sweet things that looking back really were the BIG things.  Simple moments matter!

Happy 4th of July in the USA friends and happy Summer! I hope you enjoy it on purpose!
