April 21, 2023

7 simple tips to simplify running errands for busy moms

As a busy mom myself, I know finding enough time to take care of your family’s needs can be a daunting task. Running errands is an essential part of the many daily tasks we do.  Errands can consume a lot of time.  There are some weeks I am not sure quite sure how I am going to fit in a trip to the grocery store, post office, dry cleaners, and many of the other places that need to be visited regularly. So, let’s discuss some practical tips and time-saving hacks that can help busy moms manage their busy schedules.  Who’s in?  I am! 🙋‍♀️

1. Plan Ahead…

At the beginning of the week, I usually designate one day to run errands.  Right now, it’s on Wednesday and Quincy and I celebrate accomplishing all the errands with a little lunch date, just the two of us.  He will be headed off to kindergarten in the fall so I love these fun date days for now.

I use my handy dandy errands notepad to make a list of all the errands I need to run and prioritize them based on urgency. I also include any necessary items I need at each store so I can check them off my list.

I love to save time is by multitasking multiple errands. For instance, you can combine tasks like dropping off dry cleaning and picking up your child from school or using your lunch break to run errands. This can help you save time and complete more tasks during the day.  I literally imagine myself driving through town and write down my list on my errands notepad in the order it makes the most sense.  I will stop by the car wash on the way to grab my grocery pickup, it helps me waste as little time as possible and use my time wisely.  It’s almost like a game to me to see how I can map it out purposefully.

Mapping out your errands is so simple but one of those simple time management strategies that makes a huge difference. Planning ahead will help you use your time more efficiently.  Since we live outside of our major town, I try to do this as much as possible since I always avoid an extra trip back to town when possible.

2. Create a To-Do List…

One great way to save time is to actually write down a to-do list.  When we write it down, there’s actual research that supports that our brain is more likely to remember it.  This list should include all the errands that need to be done and prioritized by importance. When you have a master list, it’s easier to manage your time and ensure that you are getting everything done.   Our brand new Simple Purposeful Living errands notepad will help utilize your time wisely and it’s a sticky note so stick it to your phone or car dashboard so you can stay on task.

3. Delegate Tasks & Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help…

Make sure to involve family members in the process and delegate tasks as appropriate.  Does your husband work close to the grocery store and could grab a few items you need?  My husband works near Target, so, occasionally I will place a pick-up order and have him pick it up on his way home.  New moms and those with little kids can involve their children in age-appropriate tasks like pushing the grocery cart, picking items from the shelf or bringing in the groceries and items from the car.  Our kids will grow up some day so the best way to teach them these valuable life skills is involving them in the process from a young age.

4. Use technology…

This is one of my favorite time-saving hacks for extra busy seasons full of activities.  I also loved this when I was a mother of young children and had sick kids but needed things from the store.  There are many apps and services that can help you simplify your errands.

Grocery delivery services can save a lot of time and stress levels as you won’t have to physically go to the store, find parking, navigate the aisles, and wait in long lines. When I was pregnant with our 3rd daughter, I could not stand the smell of the store, grocery delivery totally saved me in that season of life. It might cost a little more but if you are in a season of life where this could be beneficial, it might be worth it.  It was for us.  With online grocery shopping and apps like InstaCart and Shipt, you can easily order your groceries from the comfort of your own living room and have them delivered straight to your doorstep. This can free up a lot of time for other daily tasks or spending quality time with your family.

5. Shop Outside of Peak Hours…

If you prefer to go to local stores, try to plan your errand time outside peak hours. This can help you avoid long queues and crowds, making it easier to complete your tasks quickly.  I try my hardest to shop at places like Costco and Target mid-morning to early afternoon when it’s less crowded.

Additionally, some stores like Sam’s Club, Costco or Trader Joe’s offer great deals on bulk items and easy meals that can save you time and money in the long run.  If you need some ideas for your meal plan next week, check out these 7 ready-made family-friendly Costco meals.

6. Set Realistic Expectations…

Oh my golly, this is a hard one for me.  I can often underestimate how much time tasks can take and over-schedule myself.  Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to get everything done perfectly. Remember that it’s okay to ask for help and that some tasks can wait until another day.  Prioritize your tasks if at all posssible so you can get the most important thing done first.

7. Don’t Forget to Take Care of Yourself…

When it comes to taking care of yourself, self-care tips can be a game-changer for busy moms. Finding time for exercise, healthy meals, and mental health can help you manage your energy levels and reduce stress. You can start by incorporating small healthy habits like drinking enough water, packing healthy snacks, or taking short walks during breaks. In the long run, these simple habits have helped me stay motivated and energized throughout the day.  It seems counter-intuitive but we all know a car runs better when it’s well-maintained, fueling ourselves is essential so we can serve others to the best of our ability.

For single parents or moms with extra work projects, it’s important to prioritize tasks and delegate responsibilities. Creating a chore chart for your family can help distribute tasks and ensure that everyone is responsible for their share of work. Additionally, seeking medical advice or support can help you manage your workload and mental health effectively.
