Simple Walking Tacos Recipe

Walking tacos are one of my kids favorite foods on the planet.  When I ask them what they want for dinner, they always say “walking tacos.”  The good news is they are so easy to make, perfect for a crowd and simple enough to whip up on a busy week night.

If you are looking for a new spin on tacos, give this walking taco recipe a whirl.  You won’t be disappointed and my guess is it will soon be a staple in your meal plan rotation like it is ours!

What is a walking taco and how did it get it’s name?

Walking tacos are also referred to as a frito pie, traveling tacos, and tacos in a bag.  Essentially, you grab all your favorite taco ingredients and pile them into a bag of doritos or fritos.  Since your whole taco is in a bag, you can walk with them which is where the name came from.  In the midwest, you can find them at most sporting events, fairs and our house a few times a month!

So, how do you make a walking taco?

The other night I asked my family to help me show you how to make a walking taco so you can try it for your family or next party.  Let’s stop “taco-ing” about it and show you already!

Walking Taco Ingredients

Mini bags of Doritos or Fritos (1-3 bags per person)

Taco Meat (make 1/4-1/2 pound of meat per person)

Shredded Cheese

Shredded Lettuce

Optional toppings include:  salsa, sour cream, black olives, queso, guacamole and jalepenos.

Walking Taco Instructions

First, brown your ground meat.  Usually, I make about 1/4-1/2 pound meat per person.  My kids like leftovers so I try to remember that.  To stretch the meat, I will add a can of black beans per pound of ground beef.  I add the beans once I have browned and rinsed the ground beef.

 

 

Add in the taco seasoning and cook according to seasoning instructions.

While the meat is simmering, prepare all the toppings for the taco including chopping the lettuce and lining up the toppings in a bar-style setup starting with the chips.

 

Once, the meat and toppings are ready you can invite your guests to grab a bag and before opening, have them crunch up the chips.  Then, have them open the bag and add in the ground beef and whatever toppings they would like.

CRUNCH!

CUT!

FILL!

My kids like to eat right out of the bag while my husband likes to dump his onto a plate.  Either way, they taste great!   Be forewarned, people will want seconds so make sure you plan for a couple of bags of chips per person!
