45 Practical Tips to Lighten the May Mom Mental Load

May 6, 2025

May comes in hot, doesn’t it? It’s a beautiful month, but also bursting at the seams with concerts, field days, birthday parties, banquets, dentist appointments, final projects, and permission slips that just. keep. coming.

And in the middle of it all? It can start to feel like you’re constantly putting out fires, which isn’t fun to sit in for long. The days blur, the stress stacks, and everything feels urgent.

It’s not just the full schedule—it’s your mind carrying it all.

That’s the mental load of motherhood: not just doing the things, but thinking about them constantly. It’s the invisible work of managing family calendars, tracking household chores, planning meal prep, and staying one step ahead of your entire family—all while trying to maintain your mental health and physical space. And it’s a lot.

A lot of times, it’s not even the daily tasks—it’s the cognitive effort of remembering the laundry detergent, keeping track of toilet paper, replacing

paper towels, and refilling your child’s water bottle before they leave.

But here’s the good news: I always remind you that you don’t need a complete life overhaul. You just need a tiny tweak.

These small, strategic shifts may not look life-changing on their own, but stack a few together and suddenly life feels lighter, calmer, and 100x easier. And the best part? Most of them take less time and give you back more mental space to focus on the best things in your personal life.

Mindset & Planning

  1. Brain dump your day every morning (or before bed). Clear your mental clutter and stop juggling your daily to-do list in your head. This simple paper planner habit frees up cognitive effort. Dump everything on your brain onto the paper and then look at the list and prioritize what needs to get done first, what you’d like to get done, and if there’s time you can get done. Read more about the process here.
  2. Sketch out your weekly schedule on Sunday. A great way to gain clarity on your morning routine and prioritize family time. Get everyone on the same page (literally). Here’s my favorite weekly plan notepad!
  3. Pick a “set-it-and-forget-it” meal rotation for the month. Tacos Tuesday. Pizza Friday. Simplify your meal plans and reduce decision fatigue. Download my no-brainer 7-day meal rotation FREE printable here.
  4. Declutter your mind with a 5-minute journaling session. It doesn’t have to be deep—just something that can do much for your mental health.
  5. Use a sticky note system for your top 3 daily tasks. This is the best way to stay focused amidst the never-ending to-do list.
  6. Set your “one thing” each day and be okay if that’s all you get done. Done is better than perfection, especially for new moms or single parents.
  7. Give yourself permission to do B- work when life is full. Less pressure, more peace.
  8. Make a checklist of important dates and gifts to grab. Not sure where to start? I got a May checklist with all you need to remember; you can print it off right here.
  9. Set alarms for every pickup, drop-off, and random event. Use technology to carry the load and stay present with your family.
  10. Buy all your cards and gift cards at once. This will save you time now and reduce your stress later. Bonus tip: keep a stash for the next time a last-minute party pops up. Buy gift cards from places you shop frequently. If you don’t use the gift cards as gifts, you can spend them yourself later.

Food & Errands

  1. Use grocery pickup or delivery. Grocery shopping this way saves hours of your life and reduces the mental effort of walking the aisles with a list of things in your head. Yes, it might cost a bit more, but in this season, it might be the tiny gift you need.
  2. Fill your tank every Sunday. Your future self will thank you when you’re not rushing to child care drop-off on empty.
  3. Batch your errands on one day. Half hours add up. Combine stops and reclaim time.
  4. Sign up for a meal kit service like EveryPlate. The best things simplify dinner without sacrificing family life. Check it out here.
  5. Stock a snack basket in the car. A lifesaver on busy days when spending time taking kids all the places is inevitable and HANGRY is not what you need in May.
  6. Buy pre-cut veggies and fruit. One of my favorite ways to make healthy choices easier on a daily basis is a veggie box, but simplify it by buying the pre-cut veggies or veggie container this month. The extra cost is worth it for this short season.
  7. Double a meal and freeze the extra. Use meal prep to simplify the second baby of dinner nights.
  8. Batch-cook one protein to use all week. Ground beef and shredded chicken are easy ways to cut down on meal planning time.
  9. Create a no-brainer meal rotation. This is the best way to avoid last-minute grocery list panic.
  10. Use paper plates on the busiest nights. Let go of the pressure. One less thing to clean means more time for family members.
  11. Grab some frozen pizzas just in case. A lifesaver when your work-life balance is hanging by a thread.
  12. Plan one intentional takeout or out-to-eat night. Sometimes the right thing is not cooking at all.

Home Routines & Organization

  1. Do a 10-minute evening reset. A small step that prevents a big project from piling up overnight.
  2. Run the dishwasher nightly and unload it first thing. Routines like this free up your morning routine for more important things, like a hot cup of coffee.
  3. Keep a donate bin on standby—less stuff = less stress.
  4. Sort the kids’ papers as they come home. Birthday parties, permission slips, and library books—handle them once and be done.
  5. Sort mail before it comes inside. Use the trash can like a personal assistant and reduce the invisible burden.

Time, Tech & Energy Tweaks

  1. Delete one app that drains your time. Whether it’s social media or something else, cutting back on screen time helps with work-life balance.
  2. Use Do Not Disturb mode for a few hours. Set boundaries and protect your personal experience of peace.
  3. Stop bedtime scrolling—charge your phone across the room. Better sleep = better physical health.
  4. Start your day with 5 minutes of silence or sunshine. Deep breathing exercises and stillness are a great way to lower stress.
  5. Take a “Schultz walk” (no noise, no phone). Mental space matters. Let your thoughts breathe.
  6. Use light time-blocking to shape your day. Helps reduce the invisible work of managing daily tasks.
  7. Minimize visual clutter in common areas. Decision fatigue drops when your eyes can rest.
  8. Play peaceful music in the mornings. Improves family life and sets the tone before school drop-offs.
  9. Do a 2-minute tidy after meals. It’s a small effort, but it’s a big reward. It’s great for getting the entire family involved.

My Favorite gift to give is a notepad and a gift card. Check out my favorite notepads here.

Family & Relationships

  1. Hold a 2-minute daily family check-in. Keeping track of what’s ahead lowers stress for everyone.
  2. Lay out backpacks and clothes the night before. Own clothes + packed bags = smoother mornings.
  3. Prep teacher gifts early in the month. No more night-before panic.
  4. Make a simple celebration plan for all the May things. A little bit of planning avoids a whole day of scrambling. Do you have birthdays to celebrate? Graduations? Make a plan now!
  5. Plug in your phone out of sight during key times. Spend uninterrupted time with your family members.
  6. Build in a solo time-out (even 10 minutes). Use the right-sized break to regroup when things get loud.
  7. Let your kids help more, even if it’s slower. Gender equality starts with household responsibilities.
  8. Delegate what others can do. Share the load. You don’t have to be the only person doing everything.
  9. Don’t say yes too fast. Pause, breathe, and ask yourself if this is the right thing to do at the given time.

Just Remember…

This is a short season. While it feels overwhelming now, May will soon give way to June, when the schedule loosens, the gift-giving slows, and there’s a little more space to breathe.

We put so much pressure on ourselves this time of year—to be all the things to all the people, to show up perfectly, to never drop a ball.

But can I lovingly remind you? No one is doing it all.

So if you’re feeling stretched, you’re not alone—and you’re not failing. You’re simply human, doing your best in a really full season.

There’s grace here. And these tiny tweaks? They’re not about perfection. They’re about lightening the load just enough so you can breathe again.

Tiny tweaks, big impact. You’ve got this.
